Existence, part II: The Environment
Civilization sprouted first from my tilled soil
For I am the Fertile Crescent; the Land between the Rivers. The advent of agriculture nurtered my blossoming flowers For I am the new order; the Neolithic Revolution. Cities spring into existence and citizen therein dwell and toil For I am Sumer; the New Dawn. I am the plow and the oxen and the wheel too Sowing the seeds that sustain society. This black soil is my heart And from it grow grains and green grass. Grazing livestock provide nutrients to feed it all. A scarecrow amongst the crop says without speaking: "Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair! Behold! Fear not! Whilst you tire and toil in the torrid of today, You instill hope and life for future generations tomorrow!" I am the salvation of the terraformed Earth And from me all may feed and frolic and fornicate; But this black soil heart hurts, heaves heavily, and still harbours the hungry. Resources which once seemed eternal are emptied from the confines of the world. And American abundance mercilessly mock masses of hungry humans Starving before sinful cities surrounded by stinking sewage and psychotic soldiers. Alone in the sunlight my skin bakes into deserts ever expanding Causing more starvation and sickness, poisoned by perpetual paucity. For I am me; the Dawn of a Land of Revolting Rivers. Who am I kidding? I am no one; I am nothing. I am worth no more or no less than the dirt On which this existence struggles to cling to. Forever?
