Batman Begins sequel: Heath Ledger as The Joker

I'm sure a lot of people already know this, but I was curious about other reactions.

Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker for the next Batman movie. A fanboy favorite for the role seemed to be Crispin Glover (who would be perfect in many ways), but that was a long shot.

I imagine a number of Brokeback Batman jokes will circulate on the web, and I imagine there will be much gnashing of teeth and tightening of utility belts, etc., but I have to believe that director Christopher Nolan knows what he's doing. Ledger will probably make a more fierce Joker than Nicholson's, but would've been nowhere near the frightening one Glover might have portrayed.

Heath Ledger is kind of a pretty boy. I know he's a good actor, so I'm going to withhold judgment until I see the movie.

I always thought Nicholson was really good as the joker. Heath Ledger has some pretty big clown shoes to fill.

Re: Batman Begins sequel: Heath Ledger as The Joker

I agree with Yugoloth's statement. Nicholson's facial structure made him the perfect Joker and Heath is a pretty boy, but I'll wait until the movie comes out to decide.

I do know that I was a fan of Batman Begins, though I didn't think I would like it before I saw it. So if this director can pull the same thing off again, who knows?

Also, Crispin would be an okay joker, but he's known for his temperamental ways and also has been known to make unreasonable demands. Not a person many directors would want to work with.

Heath as the Joker? That just strikes me as odd for some reason.. I looked up that Crispin guy and I agree he'd match near perfectly.

Re: Batman Begins sequel: Heath Ledger as The Joker

I like Ledger as an actor, but I'm not sure how he would go as joker. He just seems a bit young to me, and doesn't really have that manic looks about him that Nicholson did e.g. The Shining

Jack Nicholson will always be my favourite Joker [that smile!] but who knows Heath may pull it off...

[you're right, there's going to be lots of Brokeback/Joker quips ]

EDIT:

Re: Batman Begins sequel: Heath Ledger as The Joker

Woah...that will definitely be an interesting sight to see, indeed.

I can honestly visualize Mr. Ledger fitting into that character (and I'm even more confident now, having seen sazzle's illu-ma-stration); his facial features seem perfect to me...for the Joker's character, that is. *Clears throat hurriedly* But I don't know about his voice; that's difficult to imagine being be-clowned.

Methinks this shall be kickin' because they have most of the same writers and actors from the first movie and things; I suppose we shall see how well Cap'n Brokeback realizes that infamous, pasty-faced clown guy that we all know and...love?

unless Ledger can do the eyebrows like Nicholson, I think he might have his work cut out for him.

Re: Batman Begins sequel: Heath Ledger as The Joker

heath ledger sucks and will ruin the movie. he can't act and he can't be the joker. his overrated acting ability makes me want to punch a baby.
i think that this will fall through though. it will be the same as when they were trying to fill the role of superman. they had keanu reaves and nicolas cage slates among many others.

crispin glover would have been EXCELLENT for the part. some one should start an interent petition

side note: before, they were looking to paul bettany (another waste of space actor) to be the joker but i guess that fell through.

You guys lack vision. You may not like him as an actor, but with a few pounds of makeup he can look like the joker if he wanted to.

Not sure if I agree with that.
Joker is supposed to be tall and lanky, Nicholson is anything but. I enjoyed Nicholson's performance (as I do all his performances) but as the Joker he was too off the mark. He never tried to be frightening and relied too much on bad puns and jokes. In the dark knight comics Joker is a much more sinister character.

Re: Batman Begins sequel: Heath Ledger as The Joker

^ Word.

Yeah, The Killing Joke is a good example of a fierce Joker, and I hope Ledger can bring that fierce quality to the character.

As for Mark Hamill, I like him as the cartoon Joker, but I've never really thought of him as a good screen actor (although I think he does fine in Star Wars).

Hamill would have hammed it up nicley and still come off as frightening I think.

Well, when you're talking about the movies, you're talking about something BASED ON the comic books. You can't have everything exactly the same. Take that particular Batman movie. It's been awhile (probably about 12 years) since I've read the Batman comic books, but I'm pretty sure Joker wasn't the one who killed Batman's parents, no? There are several more factual changes like that throughout. I think Jack Nicholson was the perfect Joker for that film.

Here is a FAKE image of him as the Joker. The badass part of this is that it was made last year as speculation of who would make a cool joker

Re: Batman Begins sequel: Heath Ledger as The Joker

I thought Batman Returns was awesome, even better than the first Batman movie with Michael Keaton.
The only thing I didn't like is that it didn't stay completely true as far as Batman's initial training to the original Dark Knight comics.
The original Dark Knight Batman comic's had his main training in Aikido, not Ninjutsu
