Anti-Virus
So, which one do you use? I use Kaspersky... I had AVG (which was loads better than Norton). Kaspersky is a little better than AVG, but the interface isn't as "user friendly" and it doesn't have as many options as AVG as far as "preferences" go... but it works better so thats a trade off I guess...

Symantec AV 10. Symantec makes Norton, but this is just a much better version of just the AV, none of that "security suite" crap. I've got a free pro subscription from my college. Though I've never actually used it...

So I'd have to vote for Norton, McAfee, and AVG. I hate the first two, but eh, I still got them for another year or so.

Only what came with the machine... I don't really need anything else. If I have a problem, I'll let you know, but I've been browsing the internet, downloading software, torrenting everything, etc, and have had no problems in a year of use. I just brought Jake in for a tune-up, too, and he was clean as a whistle.
On the home PC (ugh) we run AVG... twice a day.

For the record on any of the "big three" OSs you can't just magically get a virus. You have to actively consent to some kind of download. I fact, a couple months (the article is somewhere on wired.com) back there was a contest to compromise a laptops based off of the most recent systems and in each the vulnerability in each was found in a flashplayer bug, the OSs (even Vista) are incredibly resilient. The extra plug-ins provided by others are the problem.
Moral: pay attention to what you click on and you won't have a problem. |

Same here. I almost always have my firewall down because it's annoying when every time I update a game, that new version needs access to the internet. I haven't gotten a bug either.
And I use limewire.

if you use limewire then make sure you have really, really (really, really, really) good active protection... and not crappy norton... norton is the suck.
but, yea... if you know what your clicking on then it will be very for you to actually get a virus... but it can still happen, so kiddies... use protection

currently using Norton cuz i got a 180 day free trial but as soon as its done, im going straight to AVg Free, that is a really good program and its been serving my family for 5 years and I have never had a single problem or anything wrong with it. it does the job and does it well.

All well and good. But - 80% of antivirus programs can't do anything at all about a bot infection. There are one or two botnet-specific options out there, but they're brand-new. As it is, your machine could still be under the control of the Russian mob without anything going on to tell you so. And I don't trust Kaspersky as far as I can spit a rat - if RBN didn't own them from the start it will in twenty minutes.
And now you can be infected by viewing an image which doubles as an EXE file. You just have to go to the wrong page (most likely via emailed link). Never mind that botnets like Storm (which has been in control of millions of machines at one point) or Nugache can update themselves, and can alter your antivirus to pretend that it's running successfully when it's not. Although supposedly Microsoft (yes, Microsoft) beat the shit out of the Storm net with its Malicious Software Removal Tool. Apparently Storm is down to number 5 out of the top 11 botnets now. That reminds me... ASbot is still running on #almostsmartism on EFnet. I haven't been to the channel in months. I love my eggdrop. I don't care that it's taking resources (only slightly) I don't want him to die.

Ive been using an expired version of nortons (it still protects, even tho i dont pay). It doesnt take much more then common sense to avoid all problems. I use limewire, torrents, u name it. I even downloaded spyware intentionally (it allowed me to watch full episodes of Scrubs, without downloading each episode). Then i gto rid of the spyware thru un-installation, and deleted all mentions of the files everywhere.
Just dont be retarded.
