New Alabama Immigration Law Strictest in Nation

Police in Alabama are getting ready to enforce what is considered by many as the toughest immigration law in the United States.
Beginning Thursday, authorities can question people suspected of being in the country illegally and hold them without bond, and officials can check the immigration status of students in public schools, Gov. Robert Bentley said.
Those two key aspects of Alabama's new law were upheld by a federal judge on Wednesday.
The governor said parts of the law take effect immediately.

Farmers expectant of all the Mexican (and whatever other minority) workers to help with their fall harvests are already hurting. Some local farmers who were already expecting workers are having trouble finding help. They were interviewing them on Fox 6 yesterday.

A local church that was teaching English has had members withdraw because of fear that they won't be able to find work.
I mean these people aren't going back to Mexico, they're going to just move out of the state.

Some of the pending laws are whether you can be arrested for harboring or transporting workers. They also want schools to report the status of children enrolled, which could be used as a fear tactic to run off illegals. I know there would be people working at schools that would report these families, whether they were allowed to or not.
One law tried to prohibit illegals from attending public colleges and universities but was overturned.

Oh yea, and before the law was even signed, sealed, delivered AL Verify was put into effect. It's a software system used to determine U.S. citizenship, but they can also use it to check vehicle registration, valid tags, drivers licenses, and stuff like that.

Alabama's controversial immigration law has been on hold for months while a judge decides whether or not it's constitutional.

That decision is expected to be made this week.

Monday Governor Robert Bentley unveiled a new development in the illegal immigration debate. It's a state-developed computer system that can verify citizenship as quickly as you can show your driver's license.

It's called AL-Verify. Some say this isn't needed until a judge rules on Alabama's new immigration law.

People for the law say that illegals are taking jobs legal citizens could be having, because they work for cheaper wages. also, they take advantage of our welfare services and don't pay taxes. a controversial part of the law was whether or not to tax them if they are still being paid.

but it is sad because these are just people coming to work and provide for their families. A lot of them send money back home to Mexico.

TBH, my solution would be to let anyone come here and work that wants to...just tax them a little more than regular citizens or legal wage earners if they don't want to bother to make it legal. Say "hey, if you want the benefits, you gotta pay the price." Of course, i'd like to see states implement this by themselves and not federally...but people just seem to stick with the mindset that "we have to get them out." In my view, not necessarily. They're going to be here anyway, may as well benefit from it.

So much agreed. It makes me wonder how much money we waste on trying to keep people out. Let them stay and make them contribute to taxes.

I feel the same way about marijuana--legalize and tax it. Stop fighting a drug that isn't that much more harmful than alcohol or cigarettes and is less harmful than many of the legally prescribed drugs that get abused.

Yes Alabama is hurting and its their own narrow minded fault. The State is already on the verge of being bankrupt, the Governor is a sheet wearing racists, things going from bad to worse and they have no-one to blame but themselves.
