Almost Smart Convention 2009

Alright, since the wedding chaos is over it's time to start planning the convention for next year. I figured that we should keep it all in one thread to make it easier. The convention will be in Aurora/Centennial, Colorado.

We were thinking that we could focus the convention on one weekend for the people who cannot miss much work, but for those that are traveling far or just want to spend more time here we could have a whole week of activities planned.
So...

Who all is interested in coming? What do you guys want this convention to be? What dates are best (we were thinking around the 19th of July)? How long do you want it to be? What activities do you want to do?

Please consolidate all ideas and decisions in this thread so that we have one resource.

do we have to start the convention on a saturday? Friday seems a better bet, that way a whole weekend can be spent together.

I think I am coming, as well as Jason (of course) and maybe Matt (dreamslost)

I would like to go horseback riding at least. A kickball tournament would be nice or volleyball...

Also as far as lodging goes what is available?

All dates are up for discussion... I am personally up for the whole week. I'll drag your butts all over Colorado.

Lodging is up in the air as well... hotels or campsites (Cherry Creek State Park is right near us, but does not have lodges... only spaces for tents).

ehhhh I don't know about tents so much. Not much room and it will be summer, don't know how hot it gets there but I am not too keen to sleep in the heat.

I also would enjoy a week, gives everyone time to explore.

Hehe, then get a hotel room. There are plenty of them around here (zip code 80015 for reference).

sorry I might seem like a Diva, lol but camping is not my thing unless i have one of those huge tents with the bed and everything. You know like on tv or movies when a commander of an army or general or whatever has that really nice tent with curtains and rugs and everything...

It's where Almost Smart started. We also have the mountains, state and national parks, the prairie, Elitch's, Water World, hiking, mountain climbing, horseback riding, rodeos, etc.

Plus I'm there.

Sounds like a good chance to develop some landscape work, sign me up, provided you don't mind that I'll be covered in charcoal or paints the whole time

If a few of you schedule your arrival and departure within a few hours of each other the same ride can be shared from and back to the airport. Be less bother for all involved.

matt and i would love to come. a week would be great, if we could get off. he's been out west a good bit, and i'd love to spend time exploring. i've never been anywhere, really but alabama. i went to d.c. in 6th grade, like i've said before, been to the beach in alabama, and been to nashville this month, and that's about it. so i'd love to spend time just getting to know the area.

i don't know about a banquet or anything, but a dinner or something with all the members going out would be nice.

i think we'd probably end up looking into getting a hotel room. i would camp if we had to, but i like running water and a bed. we'd also probably end up driving all the way there. or taking a train. matt says those are fun.

how long we stay will definitely depend on how much money we have, but in my opinion the weekend just didn't seem like enough time. or maybe that's because i spent a lot of time doing nothing.

it'd be great if we could eventually loosely organize some groups that want to do different activities so everyone's not just left on their own trying to figure out what to do, where to go, etc. which i don't expect that to be as much of a problem since we'll have plenty of locals around us.

i get a mental picture of madre having this big, nice, fancy house-whether she does or not, and those of you that talk about horseback riding and volleyball make me think, for whatever reason, of a retirement home or adult summer camp or something.

but it all sounds fun. we have rodeos here, and horseback riding would be fun, even though i'm terrified when i get on them because i feel i don't have the balance needed to feel very comfortable on them because i move so much when they are just walking. also my legs are really short so i don't feel secure with my feet not fitting in the stirrups very well. i'm sure if i paid to ride a horse though, those matters would be taken care of.

anywho, i really look forward to next year all all the things colorado has to offer.

I originally wanted to help with the planning, but I won't be around to plan for this year. May I suggest designating a sort of planning committee? Madre gathered funds from members of Almost Smart at one point and distributed them to where they needed to go. Perhaps she has some ideas as to how to raise funds for this event (especially for the international visitors)?

If anyone else has ideas for fundraising, feel free to chip in. I don't currently have any ideas, but I won't be able to distribute any later.

If people save about $75-$100 a month for this next year, all or most of the trip should be paid. Traveling together will obviously minimize expenses.

Also, Mike, Chris and I wouldn't mind being an overnight stay for anyone driving via I80 near Chicago. Be sleeping on the floor, but it's nice, inside and free.
