Yeah, but most cities in California are earthquake-prepared, at least somewhat. You have buildings (like Japan does) which are quake-resistant.

In places where intraplate quakes occur (like Mineral, VA and now OK), the danger lies in the fact that buildings and emergency response teams aren't prepared for earthquakes.

You know what's kinda funny? The quake in Charleston 125 years ago (this year actually... I just realized that) leveled about a quarter of the city. Afterwards, many buildings that weren't destroyed were retrofitted with "earthquake bolts" seen below. However, the city of Charleston proper hasn't had a strong earthquake since.

Those giant bolts go from one end of the building through the masonry to the other. On some of the government buildings in the city, plagues are placed over the external cross of the bolts either commemorating the 1886 earthquake or providing information about the building itself.
