What - In Your Own Words - Is Music?

For everyone on this site.

For the Metalheads, alternative fans, techno fans, straight-up rock fans, christian music fans and yes emo fans.

I want you to tell me what you believe is the essence of music. What makes music and why do we fight about it? It's something we're born with liking. Or maybe not.

Why do you like the music you like? Is it because it's got a great beat to dance to? Is it because you've been told to like it? Is it because everyone else likes it? Or is it because you truly love the music. Do you, at heart, feel the music pump through your veins like an enriching blood?

This is meant to open your eyes to all music. Not to like it. Not to make you listen to it. But to help you acknowledge it.

Music is in all of us whether we know it or not. Maybe we shouldn't fight over who's great and who's not. It will never be known. Because music is inside of you, the individual.

Here's a thought. Hypothetically, let's say a Hitler clone came back and took over America, or the world for that matter. And he told us what music we MUST like. If we don't listen to it we die.

Do you think we'd be bashing each other's favorite band? No. We would fucking rise up and, as lovers of music, would take down that mother with no grudge against each other.

We are a society of people for the music. And that's what we should be. Not a bunch of naive individuals who believe that only one musician or band in the world is the best. Because they're not. It's as plain as day. Everyone is either good or not so good. Musicians and bands cannot be "the best."

So tell me what you believe music is. Why you love it, hate it, or worship it.

I'd like to know.

I myself, believe that music is an expression, not unlike speech, an expression of our hearts, our feelings, this may not be that case for some, but music is something we feel represents something.

I love music because, it allows me to feel a range of different feelings and emotions (love, hate, anger, sorrow and everything else)

Music is the international language, it has been said so many times before, but in any way shape, form, culture, if your playing music, even if it be for animals, for a moment someone can understand and feel what you feel, it is the most powerful form of communication.

Re: What - In Your Own Words - Is Music?

Music is what you make of it. In other words, it's music if the musician who creates it calls it music. Other people may scoff and say it's not, but who are they to decide if they're not the one's making it. People push the boundaries of what music is, as did Pollock and Twombly in the 50s and 60s.

But, like I said, everyone's definition for, "good music," is different, but the definition of music itself is universal. It's an artistic expression of the individual who produced/composed it, and it's music simply for the fact that the musician deems it so.

Simply, music is the art of sound... whatever sound is music to the maker and listener. Look at STOMP... making music with trash cans and zippo lighters! Being an ex drummer all the music I compose is percussion-heavy, but I can find art in almost any kind of music...except country.

Yeah...all that twanging and wailing makes me want to upchuck. My brother (as I've said before, a very accomplished professional keyboardist) used to occasionally find himself in the "slouch and belch" venues...playing S&B music. Hey... whatever pays the bills I guess.

Hey- you never know what will happen in a place like that! Brother story again... back when he was first starting, he was playing in a restaurant the slow boring crap he didn't like in a fairly decent band that was going nowhere. Someone in the audience was watching... REALLY watching him on the keys and ended up hiring him right out of the band he was in to play in the biggest band Albuquerque had at the time... with bookings all over the state!

read Queen the eye, or any other future based novel that is very much that hypothetical arguement...you'll see that 'we' as a society bend to the will an do what is expected an told of us...

actually read the script of Queen's We will rock you musical if you can find it on the net...that exact situation is in it...

to me, music is my life, its the very essence (sp?) of who I am now...it saved me from a life of well...shite lol

Re: What - In Your Own Words - Is Music?

I wish i was as musical as some other people. I think i understand music on some level, teh changes pitches and cordination of multiple sounds. But alas, i will never BE musician.

the music that i lie most is the deep sensual jazzy sort. The kind that makes my hips sway uncontrolably and open my lips to sing. I love music that inspires me. If i suddenly get teh desier to cry or laugh or paint while listening to something then that is great music for me. I like music that makes me feel or think. If i can listen to teh instrumnets and viualise something within my mind, and peice together feelings. I love it. I love good music.

Ziech needs to find this thread. I have never encountered him without music. The kid is a freaking musa-holic.

Re: What - In Your Own Words - Is Music?

someone once said to me a couple of years back..."What would happen if we cut you? would you bleed music notes?"

I also laughed at that comment...but I see where they were coming from, its hardly ever you see me without either, my iPod or my guitar...or some form of stereo system or something, listening or playing music...

I sometimes will just sit their in absoloute silence and just listen to a song in my head, note for note, word for word...with a big cheshire cat like grin on my face

I will also just randomly start tapping on things constantly, much to the annoyance of everyone around me...

its part of my life, no...more..it is my life...I've had people say to me, "Stop wasting your time dean, you wont make it, your gonna grow up one of these days" and to them I just turn the volume up, and carry on playing...and I remember one simple line to counter them all...

"While the fire still burns inside of me, I will never fall...with my guitar in my hand I will conquer all"

Re: What - In Your Own Words - Is Music?

Music - Noise put together in such a way that it sparks an emotion within someone who listens to it.

Defining it as this explains why we fight about it, that's for sure. The first rule of human existance is self-preservation, and because of that we defend our emotions. Emotions = music, therefor we defend our music as if it were apart of us.

That is also why everyone thinks 'their' music is better than other peoples, and why we get along better with people who like the same style of music.

Before I met my current wife I would have agreed with you on this one point. My wife gets this kinda blank look on her face when I play the occasional Yes, Kansas, or ELP song for her. She just plain doesn't like it. She knows that I really don't like her taste in music either-old school rap and 80s dance trax, but on this one small matter alone do we disagree. Neither of us tries to belittle the other on this issue, nor do we "inflict" our musical tastes on the other. With all that said, I can appreciate the art in a Cindi Lauper or Gloria Estefan song without necessarily liking it. I can even appreciate the ability of a rapper to rap and I HATE rap/hiphop.

Re: What - In Your Own Words - Is Music?

See you have to remember that everywhere in the world no matter what anyone says there will be conflicts and you may never reach a final solution because of the vast capacity to think freely in the human mind.

We develope our own ideas of what is right, essentially morals, and we act on these beliefs.

You said your wife and you differ only on your musical taste, hence why you are still together. You two have alot in common that something as small as music can be set aside for the greater things you share. Also to touch on the matter of people being able to respect music, but not like it, you have to go with a majority view in a society like today and today we have closed minded individuals who would rather ignore something than embrace it and recognize it as valuable to someone else.

Re: What - In Your Own Words - Is Music?

the answer I am about to give defies the key question asked here, but meh.

I agree with Arnold Copland [1900-1990] when he says:

The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, 'Is there a meaning to music?' My answer would be, 'Yes.' And 'Can you state, in words, what the meaning is?' My answer to that would be, 'No.'

I don't agree with George Bernard Shaw,(1856 - 1950) who says:

Hell is full of musical amateurs: music is the brandy of the damned.

I can empathise most effectively with Mr Presley (1935 - 1977), when he wisely states:

I don't know anything about music. In my line you don't have to.

Added to those are 41 quotes about music on the link below.
