t.v.- cartoons

I have a three year old sister and I cannot get over how stupid cartoons are these days.

When we were kids, our cartoons were frickin awesome. I mean, we had Carebears and Strawberry Shortcake and Captain Planet! Rainbow Brite! My Little Ponies! The Smurfs! It was great.

But now it seems like all the shows are so...educational and bland, boring. Dora the Explorer? Blues Clues? Stanley? Rugrats? Thornberries? What the fuck? The quality has definately gone down the drain. Our shows taught moral lessons and they were just better, in general.

I mean, think about it-when Captain Planet and the Planeteers had a problem, did they sing their abc's? Did they count to 50 before taking action? Did they consult their backpacks or their maps? Did they have to recite their life history in Spanish? No-but when their powers combined (go ahead, say it with me: "Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Heart...."I AM CAPTAIN PLANET!!"") and the world was a better place. They even gave you recycling tips at the end of each show. I'd like to see a cartoon these days that could even compare.

I know this sounds like I'm living in the past, but maybe someone out there can relate.

Captain Planet/Cliff Richard is the best. I relate completely!

I LOVE CAPTAIN PLANET!
although he did look a bit like Cliff Richard.
Did you know that Whoopie Goldberg did the voice over for gaiA!
Captain planet was the very coolest. He actually made you want to save the planet. I felt like spending all day picking up litter when i'd just watched CAPTAIN PLANET!
He is the best.

That's true, iwant2stalku. We don't teach the kids anything indirectly anymore

I never really absorbed any of that stuff, though. Captain Planet never made me want to recycle. I learned, I guess, but never had an urge to apply my knowledge. Are all kids as apathetic?

Guess not.

I like cartoons now because they provide mindless entertainment... they're something I don't need to analyze.

Well, you have to keep in mind that Captain Planet came around in the early 90's-when people would practically shoot you in the face if they saw you throw a Wendy's cup on the ground.

The show exemplified the attitudes that people had about saving the planet and keeping it green and even brought that to kids. My family didn't become an army of recyclers or anything, but I remember one episode where Captain Planet said that taking your lunch in a paper bag was bad because they make the world trashy. So I made my parents buy me a plastic lunchbox.

Maybe I was just easily influenced...I still wear strawberry shortcake shirts (I'm wearing one right now, hahaha) and I have a rainbowbrite shirt. I learned how to braid by playing with My Little Ponies, for God's sake. I miss that.

I miss being a kid-waking up at 6 am on Saturdays to watch cartoons.

I'm not saying that you CAN'T get anything out of cartoons, because not every kid is going to get something positive out of them or remember all the characters 10 years from now...but why not make the cartoons GOOD and ENTERTAINING, at the very least.

*grins* I still wake up early (not 6, but early enough ) to watch cartoons...

You're right, though. Standards have dropped quite a bit. Not just in television, either. Nobody bothers with quality...

What are you talking about? Splinter was awesome! he was a one eared, kung-fu fighting giant rat! and what about silverhawks? and thundercats? and bravestar? although, i'll admit, i watched an episode of bravestar recently, (i hadnt seen one in i think about 7 years) and i was amazed at how obsessed i was with something so corny! but those were all still good shows.

And cartoons arent the only shows that have lost quality. i mean, i admit that i actually liked power rangers. however, that was the original, and when i was younger. but still, power rangers was like captain planet in a way. they sometimes have little scenes after the show about friendship, environment, bullying, respect, and all that. but then they got into these newer shows that have gotten really stupid.

I was down with the power rangers, back in the day... I remember running around and doing lame karate trying to be like the pink ranger....haha But that was when they were cool. Isn't it like, space rangers or something now? They don't have any of the originial five anymore.

And, the rat DID scare me!

The cartoons now have no real story, moral or plot for that matter. I miss The Pink Panther (the silent version), TMNT, Power Rangers and all those Saturday cartoons. They were so worth waking up to.

Todays cartoons are more worried about being educationa; then anything else. Being violent and Karate chopping villains isnt politically correct these days. I grew up watching the same things everyone else did, and you dont see me killing people and blaming the programs i watched as a kid. Screw tv programmers and the gay ass parents who think their kids are weak enough to do bad shit because of the TV.
