AT&T gonna rape DSL customers

Those fucking bastards at AT&T!! After a decade of begging for (and finally getting) a decent speed connection so that about 80% of the internet which was once unavailable to us via dialup is now finally accessible, AT&T pulls THIS SHIT on us!!

With Alex on his XBox 360 doing endless hours of Halo, and Barb and I streaming TV shows, this might force us to cut back on it all... or, if the cable people ever get off their asses and extend that service I told you all about a few weeks ago, just to dump those asshats at AT&T altogether.

Re: AT&T gonna rape DSL customers

Comcast imposes a cap of 250gb.

With four (sometimes five) computers, a Wii, an XBox, a Blu-ray player, and several smart phones connecting to my network, I have been keeping a close eye on my bandwidth.

I watch a lot of TV, but not on the TV. I download all my TV shows because I don't have cable in my room and the DVR is commandeered by the women of the household who record stupid shit. Thus, I download an average of a gig or two a day just for television (not just the sitcoms and dramedies I watch either, but science programs and history stuff too I occasionally download which increase the amount of traffic about 50% if not doubling it some days).

I download movies too. Movies that I may or may not watch. Or we will occasionally order a free movie through our Blu-Ray player. I'd estimate that about 20 gigs a month come from movies.

I download games, demos, pirated & cracked version (which reminds me, Shogun: Total War came out yesterday so I'll be downloading all 17 gigabytes of that today).

Not gonna lie either, I do occasionally get in the mood for porn hunting and when I find a stash of AVIs or MPEGs I will download to my heart's content. Sometimes, I may even find something on a tube (porn or not) which I will save using a Firefox add-on called "DownloadHelper".

I have no idea how much traffic all the computers use for browsing. I don't play the Xbox but my sister's baby daddy does nightly. I don't know how much that uses either.

However, I do keep track of my bandwidth usage via my router, since everything must go through that. This month I have downloaded more than usual (I got into Ugly Betty and d/l three seasons of it, as well as Glee season 1 and 2 although that may have been in February.)

ANYWAY....

LET ME CHECK MY TOTALS!

As I said above. Comcast caps at 250gb. I set my router bandwidth cap at 150gb. That's the same as what AT&T is proposing.

This month, downloading much much more than normal, my total bandwidth usage is ~81GB.

My router's traffic meter says this:
Internet Traffic Statistics
Start Date/Time: Monday Feb 28 23:00:00 2011
Current Date/Time: Wednesday Mar 16 12:35:08 2011
Traffic Volume Left: 66 G 924 M 669 K

-=-=-

As you can see, i still have almost 67 gigabytes of bandwidth before my self-imposed cap of 150gb. my router will actually send me an email when I have but 10 gb remaining on that. Of course, I'd still have another hundred gigs from Comcast if I reach my self-imposed cap.

I guess my point in all this rambling and furious typing is that you aren't likely to have anything to worry about with a DSL cap of 150gb.

My other point would be that my neighbors, if they knew how much bandwidth I hog, would probably hate me.

Don't fret, Tom! :P

Re: AT&T gonna rape DSL customers

We watch ALL of our TV programming online. We don't even have a "regular" TV set plugged in any more. Is there a difference between actually downloading (bittorrent/shareaza style) as opposed to streaming like Loombo, Hulu, etc? I figure data flow is data flow and they count every byte.

Re: AT&T gonna rape DSL customers

i would like for ISP to not be able to limit usage. Period. and deffinatly don't want them to start charging for frequent used sites like they are proposing to do....

Re: AT&T gonna rape DSL customers

What routers do you both use? Your router may have a traffic monitor. Or its updated firmware might have one. If it doesn't, you might be interested in using an alternative firmware such as open-wrt or dd-wrt.

As far as streaming everything goes, look at it this way:

Streaming versus downloading consumes the same amount of bandwidth.
Streaming versus downloading via torrents consumes bandwidth proportional to your upload/download ratio.

In my case, I try to retain a ratio of 1:1 overall. I have one computer that doesn't share but also doesn't download much while my main and fastest computer downloads much more and uploads at a ratio of 1:2.

This ultimately results in still only uploading a little more than half of what I download.

So if you're not downloading via torrents, you're not likely consuming as much bandwidth as you might think you are since streaming doesn't upload.

I haven't been able to reach my bandwidth cap yet. As of this writing, I am ~37GB away from my self-imposed cap of 150GB.
But consider that for every torrent I download, I upload its equivalent amount or up to twice that.

Neither of you should really have anything to worry about. I mean, I've also got an eggdrop bot monitoring 30+ IRC channels (not much bandwidth really) and a proxy server I like to use when I am away from my home network (I just don't trust other people's networks).

-=-=-

Tom, you really needn't worry. In the long run, however, if those cable people ever get out there, I would go with cable internet over DSL personally. But that's just because I like file-sharing and DSL has a lower upload limit. I don't know what I would do without my 20Mbps/3Mbps.

Ultimately, the limits on usage will be done away with as the network infrastructure grows. You have capitalism to thank for that. Yay, capitalism!

As for charging for frequently used sites... I'm not sure I know what you mean. Who is proposing this?

Re: AT&T gonna rape DSL customers

ISP companies are trying to propose this. They want it to be like cable bundle packages. pay such and such to recieve acess to this bundle of useage and sites. I found this information on stumble, i will post a link soon.

Oh, I got it. Yes, Net neutrality is important. ISPs want to make more money from their customers and that's understandable, but do they not realize that by forcing customers to pay for additional services they are a) opening up new markets for their competitors to undermine them and b) are likely to send more people to the DarkNet to get their now-illegal content?

Re: AT&T gonna rape DSL customers

DarkNet is a term used to refer to anything that is not technically legal in terms of downloading, particularly by peer-to-peer file-sharing.

It may also refer to closed groups (hacker, cracker, warez, software pirates, etc.).
