Tea Helps Memory

British researchers at the University of Newcastle in England found drinking green and black tea every day, actually inhibits the activity of certain enzymes associated with memory in the brain.

The study's lead researcher, Doctor Ed Okello, says green tea was most effective but further tests are needed. It's hoped these findings could possibly lead to the development of a new treatment for Alzheimer's disease, an extreme and aggressive form of dementia affects an estimated ten million people worldwide. Drinking both teas stopped the enzyme 'acetylcholinesterase' from doing its job. 'acetylcholinesterase' is responsible for breaking down the chemical messenger or neurotransmitter, acetylcholine.

A break down or drop in acetylcholine is often a signal of Alzheimer's disease. Right now, there's no cure for Alzheimer's but researchers hope this new study will make it possible in the future. The study is published in the scientific journal "Phytotherapy Research."
