Cops of the World (reimagined)

Still the Cops of the World

Come sign up for the war, boys

Quick, sign up for the war

You better finish up your tour boys

Better finish up your tour.

We've got ourselves in deep, now we are lost

And we'll stick with it regardless of the cost

So please take heed to all we accost

Cuz we're still the cops of the world, boys

We're still the cops of the world

We pick and choose and we please, boys

Pick and choose as we please

You'd best stay down on your knees boys

Best stay down on your knees

We're hot from this hell-hole known as Iraq

And many will come home wrapped up in a sack

Just ready your weapon as we prepare another air attack

Cuz we're still the cops of the world boys

We're still the cops of the world

We've got to take over this land, boys

Got to take over this land

But ain't American Idol grand boys

Ain't American Idol grand

Through television shows and dozens of beers

The public remains jejune with innumerable fears

And our military will stay for years upon years

Cuz we're still the cops of the world boys

We're still the cops of the world

Dump the towel-heads in a pile, boys

Dump the towel-heads in a pile

Kill those terrorists with a smile, boys

Kill terrorists with a smile

Privacy's overrated, we need the Patriot Act

To filter out bad guys and that's just a fact

We'll imprison these "suspects" without due process or tact

Cuz we're still the cops of the world, boys

We're still the cops of the world

Go on gas up your SUV, boys

Gas up your SUV

Oil looks cheap to me, boys

Oil looks cheap to me

We've got enough but ourselves we should spoil

As long as there's terrorism, there's bound to be oil

So sit back and wait as we conquer Mideast soil

Cuz we're still the cops of the world, boys

We're still the cops of the world.

Please stay off of the grass, boys

Please stay off of the grass

Here's a kick in the ass, boys

Here's a kick in the ass

We'll smash down your doors, we don't bother to knock

We've done it before, so why all the shock?

We're the biggest and toughest kids on the block

Cuz we're still the Cops of the World, boys

We're still the Cops of the World

We're sorry for your loss, boys

Sorry for your loss

But we did it in the name of progress, boys

We did it in the name of progress

We own half the world, oh say can you see

And it's not enough, we still feel greedy

And we won't stop until you're all considered "free"

Or at least until you establish a fake democracy

With corrupt politics and laws revoking liberty

While under the aegis of American policy

Individuals are restricted until there is no me

Where standing instead there forever shall be

Corporate conglomerates infinitely wealthy

And none are the wiser who feel genuinely

And the thinkers they never can seem to agree

It's too late anyway as there's nowhere to flee

Cuz we're still the cops of the world boys

We'll always be the cops of the world

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Well, this was something I wrote back on January 26th of last year. Is anyone out there familiar with Phil Ochs? He originally wrote the song and I changed the lyrics all but the "Cops of the World" bit (save for the added "still") and the part that is highlighted in blue. (At least, I think it is blue. I'm color-blind, you know.)

Ever since I first discovered Phil Ochs about four years ago I have been a vehement supporter and I actively try to get as many people into his work and life as possible. What does this mean to you, O Noble Reader?

It means that I will send you mp3s of his. Phil Ochs was a contemporary of Bob Dylan (they were close friends) but Dylan became more famous. Ochs tells his opinion of the Dylan's later work in the song "Chords of Fame" with the lines:
"Play the chords of love, my friend
Play the chords of pain.
If you want to keep your songs,
Don't, don't don't
Don't play the chords of fame."

Ochs was heavily influenced by Woody Guthrie. If you don't know who Guthrie is, or have no desire to learn, then kill yourself right now. Please. Phil Ochs was at Guthrie's deathbed and, upon his passing, wrote a song called "Bound for Glory":

"And it's pastures of plenty wrote the dustbowl balladeer
And this land is your land, he wanted us to hear
And the risin' of the unions will be sung about again
And the deportees live on through the power of his pen.

And now he's bound for a glory all his own
And now he's bound for glory."

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

So, as you can tell, I am a huge fan of Phil Ochs's music! And I really want to share it with all of you. So if you want, as I said, I will send you mp3s; or if you can't be bothered to be sent large files (*ahem* Tom) I will burn you a data disc containing a number of his albums and mail it to you.

Don't worry about him not getting the money he deserves for it. He hanged himself in 1976.

PM me!
