'Star Wars' holograms invented

No shit. There's no glass. No water vapor. Just a 3D image floating in midair. Oh, yes.

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST, President: Hiroyuki Yoshikawa) and Keio University (President: Yuichiro Anzai), in collaboration with Burton Inc. (CEO: Hidei Kimura), have succeeded in the experimental fabrication of a device displaying "real 3D images" which consist of dot arrays in space where there is nothing but air.

Most of the 3D displays reported until now draw pseudo-3D images on 2D planes by utilizing the human binocular disparity. However, many problems occur, e.g., the limitation of the visual field, and the physiological displeasure due to the misidentification of virtual images.

The device we have developed utilizes the plasma emission phenomenon near the focal point of focused laser light. By controlling the position of the focal point in the direction of the x-, y-, and z-axes, we have succeeded in displaying real 3D-images constructed by dot arrays in air (3D-space).

Re: 'Star Wars' holograms invented

that's fucking awesome, you know it's only a matter of time before they can create animations like that.

Assuming they aren't already creating animations. The lasers have to move in order to generate a static image anyway. It's just a matter of speed.

Another rep point your way, Holo. Thats cool as hell. Yes, as to the animation of freestanding 3d images all it's going to take is a refining and speeding up of the technology they have already developed. One thing I notice wasn't mentioned: Color. The "plasma luminous body" seems to be white, blue or violet based on the pix included in the paper you posted the link to. It seems to me that changing the pulse rate of the lasers and/or adjusting the polarity of the lasers will solve that issue...maybe having 3 sets of lasers producing the same red/green/blue system that creates the colors in a TV...we'll see in time.
Damn cool nonetheless.

Re: 'Star Wars' holograms invented

I think changing the frequency of the lasers is the answer there - they'd be igniting different gases in the air, to create plasmas of different colors. If the lasers are polarized, adjusting that wouldn't change anything - the light's still hitting the air molecules at random angles since the molecules are in random orientations. Adjusting the pulse rate would probably only affect brightness.

Re: 'Star Wars' holograms invented

Everytime I tell my parents the future is going to be really advanced they say "Yeah that's what I thought when I was a kid too."

Well did they have free floating 3D images based on lasers and the light spectrum? Didn't think so.
