Writer's Block Poem

Writer's Block Poem

Tenacity pays off in writing a poem
even if you have to start over
five or six times.
Try writing in a traditional form
if you get stuck
for too long.

Write anything, short or long
anything to get started. No poem
is too bad to stay "stuck"
over
never to take form.
If at times,

You must write the worst crap you have ever written, times
infinity, then write it, anyway. Hate yourself later. Or let pride win, spend long
hours languishing in impotent perfectionism, form
nothing, hold onto your ideal poem
until your life is over,
all your perfect poems stuck

inside your body, stuck
in the earth, never to take root. In these times
there is no time to think over
every word, to long
for a perfect poem.
We must form

What time allows us to form,
drawing from experiences that have stuck
with us in the time we had. A poem
should echo experience, only as it can. There may be times
where you draw from the imagination, for a long
stretch of creativity, favored over

the limitations of reality. A hope hovers over
the chiseled stone of the past, hope, a metaphor for a form
of flying. It won't be long
before you start reaching for that hope, having stuck
your hands into the air, the freest times
your soul has ever known. Even if a poem

fails to end well, the life of every poem,
long or short, should have given something over, should form itself to the heart, maybe for those times
when another writer finds himself stuck.

.................................................

Yes, this is a very candid, sloppy poem. It's also a half-formed, Quasimodo-like, poem. I was just so excited that I was able to write something "complete," which I haven't done in *some* time, other than almost-daily fragments, that I wanted to share.

(The irony of this disclaimer is hard to escape.)

If anything, by writing this and reading famous examples, I learned how much I love the "Sestina" form, which this poem is trying to be, and how useful this form proves in, indeed, overcoming writer's block. The form is easy enough in that the lines do not have to be a specific length or meter and challenging enough in the pattern of the six repeating line endings--all enough to keep the words, and desire to finish, flowing. Meter is fun, and all, but sometimes easy is... funner.

The End.

*Shame face*

P.S. Yes, "times infinity." The ultimate trump card in any situation....

I like it. It's great. I love that line, "You must write the worst crap you have ever written."
