CHICAGO — The Rev. Jesse Jackson used the N-word during a break in a TV interview where he criticized presidential candidate Barack Obama, Fox News confirmed Wednesday.


The longtime civil rights leader already came under fire this month for crude off-air comments he made against Obama in what he thought was a private conversation during a taping of a "Fox & Friends" news show.


In additional comments from that same conversation, first reported by TVNewser, Jackson is reported to have said Obama was "talking down to black people," and referred to blacks with the N-word when he said Obama was telling them "how to behave."


Though a Fox spokesman confirmed the TVNewer's account to The Associated Press, the network declined to release the full transcript of the July 6 show and did not air the comments.


Jackson — who is traveling in Spain — apologized in a statement Wednesday for "hurtful words" but didn't offer specifics.


"I am deeply saddened and distressed by the pain and sorrow that I have caused as a result of my hurtful words. I apologize again to Senator Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, their children as well as to the American public,"



Jackson said in a written statement. "There really is no justification for my comments and I hope that the Obama family and the American public will forgive me. I also pray that we, as a nation, can move on to address the real issues that affect the American people."


A spokeswoman for Jackson's civil rights organization, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, said she could not confirm that Jackson used the slur.
Jackson has called on the entertainment industry, including rappers, actors and studios, to stop using the N-Word. He also urged the public to boycott purchasing DVD copies of the TV sitcom "Seinfeld" after co-star Michael Richards was taped using the word during a rant at a Los Angeles comedy club in 2006.


The Rev. Al Sharpton, who has joined Jackson in opposition of the word, said Wednesday he wanted to hear the comments for himself and declined to discuss Jackson specifically.


"I am against the use of the N-word by anyone and I think we must be consistent," he told The Associated Press. "We must not use the word."

Now.. since he is usually calling for people's resignation when they use the "n" word or refer to people as Nappy.. shouldn't he resign :D

I think it's obvious that Jackson is just trying to get people to forget about this as quickly as possible. He's apologizing, saying let's focus on making the world a better place, and look what Michael Richard did. Also, let's not buy the white guy show. Turning racism back on whites. I can only imagine that he said something like "Obama was tryin' to tell niggas how to behave." He's just 'being black'. That's how black people i work with talk. And that's not racist for me to say. They are the ones trying to be different by giving themselves names different than what they call us. "Sister, nigga, brother, Big Daddy, etc." They don't want equality. They want black-quality. That's why he's turning this back around on white people.

I think it's fucking bullshit. The word cracker is what black slaves would call overseers with whips. They would crack the whips. So when a black person calls us that, they're calling us racist white people who support slavery.

It's a word that is obviously extremely offensive to some people. We've got tons of people who lived through segregation. When this word was constantly used by white men and women to oppress blacks. I can see how that word would still step on a few toes. It'll probably be eventually forgotten, then when it is used again, it won't have the same meaning anymore.

And something similar - My local newspaper has been covering all week the story of a vandalized trailer park. The word nigger was spray painted all over blacks' homes. They fired shots through this guy's SUV. Today the news said they would actually be offering a reward for information leading to an arrest.

I think as long as that word is used in everyday language as a racist word, it shouldn't be used by anyone, period. Here in Alabama KKK meetings still exist.

Last time I checked he was a black man, but when a black person uses the word "Nigger" its almost like giving permission for everyone else to use it too. Its a double standard and if you are going to use it, then dont be so shocked when its used on you.

I only heard the word used twice when I was a kid. The next door neighbor's 10 year son called my dad that once, he went and confronted his mother who happened to have her best friend over, a black woman, she turned 10 shades of red and couldnt apologize enough to both of them.
The second time when I was 15, I was visiting my cousin in Michigan, who is 1/2 black and 1/2 mexican. When a black girl walked by and called me a Spic, I didnt know what to say, without offending my cousin, it was she that turned and called the girl a Nigger, which left me stunned. Growing up in Los Angeles which is really a melting pot of all races, yes there is prejudice but there is also more tolerance too. Surprisingly living here in the South, we have not experienced any personally, in fact it seems quiet the opposite, people have gone out of their way to make us feel welcomed.

I don't see why this is important in any way. Really. It's just Jesse Jackson getting into the news because he's a loud, stubborn, ignorant motherfucker who can't take it when other black people get more attention than him. He has to be the leader of the community and he'll do anything to stop Obama from becoming president. Al Sharpton was probably sabotaged by Jackson back when he was a candidate.
