Just Say Merry Christmas!

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/ChristmasC...ory?id=1394841

Quote:
They may sound like simple salutations, but they have become opposing battle cries in a wintry culture war with conservative Christian groups going up against retailers, municipalities and even the White House.

If you receive a card from President and Mrs. Bush this season, you will find the first dogs sitting in snow, a scripture from the book of Psalms and "Best wishes for a holiday season of hope and happiness."
And to some, that is pure blasphemy, because nowhere does it mention the word "Christmas."

"When I got the card from President Bush, it didn't mean that much to me," said Catholic League president Bill Donohue. "I figured that's what most presidents did. Then I found that I was wrong. Everybody from F.D.R. to Bush's father had at least one card every year while they were in office that said Merry Christmas."

The so-called "war for Christmas" is actually thousands of years old because 'tis the season of mixed messages.

Evergreen trees, candles and gift-giving were all part of a pagan winter ritual hundreds of years before Jesus was even born. The Christ child and St. Nicholas joined party in the 4th century. Jewish Hanukah and African Kwanzaa emerged in America in the 20th.

Political Furors

But any effort to be all-inclusive by referring to the "holidays" has riled those anxious to keep Christ at the center of the season and even sparked political battles.

A spruce on Capitol Hill is a Christmas tree once again, losing its "holiday" title thanks to the effort of Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, R-Ill.

After Target opted for generic holiday advertising, a conservative Christian group threatened the retailer with a boycott 700,000 strong. Target's new campaign now includes the word "Christmas."

An Ohio couple says they've sold almost 15,000 "Just say Merry Christmas" bracelets.

Donohue said he wants to know why people insist on "neutering" the holidays.

"Elvis didn't sing about 'Blue Holiday,' " he said. "Nobody says 'I'll be home for the holiday.' It's, 'I'll be home for Christmas.' If you can't say Christmas at Christmas time, when 85 percent of the population is Christian and 96 percent of the population celebrates Christmas, something's wrong."

In Phoenix, the sheriff has ordered Christmas music to play throughout the county jail all day long hymns and carols and for agnostics he says he'll mix in the singing Chipmunks.

"We can't say 'Merry Christmas' in the U.S., in the world anymore," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Ariz. "What are we coming to? I am saying it. I am singing it. It's gonna be in this jail, and that's the way the ball bounces."

'Political Correctness Run Amok'

Perhaps people who are offended by the use of the Christmas have "drunk too much from the multicultural well" and are victims of "political correctness run amok," said Donohue.

There are two ways to deal with the problem, he added.

"You can educate the people that object to 'merry Christmas,' or you can veto the use of the term," he said. "I want to educate the bigots."

A lot of people who are afraid to say merry Christmas are actually Christians who don't want to offend people, Donohue said.

"On Thursday, I'm going to be with Jackie Mason and we're going to take a Hummer, go down Fifth Avenue and have press conference about Jews saying, 'It's okay to say merry Christmas. All my Jewish friends say it's okay to say merry Christmas.' "

But for those who are still worried about offending people, Donohue has a solution.

"I think we can say, 'Merry Christmas and have a happy New Year,' " he said. "That covers it both."
Its absolutely ridiculous to be this politically correct. "Holiday trees" are just fucking retarded names for a CHRISTMAS tree. Im extremely happy to see the christian religion win a battle against minorities (religious ones). Its sad to see the religion this country was founded and raised upon lose its heritage. I want one of those bracelets... ill buy one if i find them somewhere.

I want to hear your opiniond about this.

Re: Just Say Merry Christmas!

I don't see why they're up Bush's ass about the card. Happy Holidays on a card is a good way to reach out for Christmas, Chanukah, AND New Years.

The attempting to 'rename' the Christmas tree to Holiday tree is just retarded. People who are 'offended' by the word Christmas are just pussies, pussies who probably celebrate it, yet call it Holiday-Day where they open their Holiday presents under the Holiday tree, in their house that's decorated with Holiday lights... *Snarl face*

What a bunch of wankers! People that are offended of Christmas are just fucking losers. It's a christmas tree, they are christmas lights, its a christmassy fucking time.

I hate Christmas, but damned if they try to take it away.

People are far too hyper-sensitive these days.

Actually, i think there are less hyper-sensitive people than there are people who are paranoid about others' hyper-sensitivity.

In other words: Merry Christmas, goddamnit.

Re: Just Say Merry Christmas!

Christmas is a harmless word.

There is no reason to take the word from the holiday.

You don't have to believe in Christ to celebrate Christmas, though that technically defeats the purpose behind the holiday.

Re: Just Say Merry Christmas!

Those people berating Bush, Target/Walmart and such for displaying "Happy Holidays" instead of Christmas can go fuck themselves. Traditionally, Chanukah, Kwanza, Christmas, and New Years are all celebrated in December. And, to roughly quote Jon Stewart, "In the English language, the description of more than one Holiday tends to denote the use of an 's'. After all, it's not simply one holiday being celebrated.. so it would be holidays" But the whole "holiday presents/holiday tree" that's bull shit. the tree is for christmas, not chanukah, so get over it. would you like to cal lthe menorah, the "holiday-orah?" geez.

People should say whatever the hell they want. If Target thinks they should say "happy holidays", who are these people to say they have to say "merry christmas"? and so what if people have a holiday tree? call yours a christmas tree and quit complaining about other people.

What religion was this country founded upon? Christianity.
What religion is Christmas from? Christianity.
And it is not a holiday tree you put up during holiday time, and decorate with holiday lights and holiday ornaments, then have holiday dinner.

Its a christmas tree, christmas time, christmas lights, christmas ornaments, and christmas dinner. I understand people saying "Happy Holidays" to encorporate good wishes for all of them, but to remove Christmas from the word Christmas tree is just stupid.

And Christmas is a federal holiday. If the government feels Christmas is important enough for a whole day, why cant companies acknowledge its precense??

because they have the right to not do so. If its a kosher company, and if they dont wanna say merry fucking christimas, its their godamn right.

There isnt a law that says "you dont say merry xmas, you die".

Same goes with people. Their right. They dont wanna do it, deal.

"Christmas" was originally a pagan holiday celebrating the winter solstice. The "christmas tree," "christmas presents," and "christmas dinner" all predate Christianity by a good bit. As for what religion this country was founded on, my understanding of it was that the first European settlers were fleeing from religious persecution. So it's antithetical to say that we all have to be Christian because we were founded by Christians.

I celebrate Christmas and I say "happy holidays" to include New Year into the package, not because I'm worried about pissing off Jews and Muslems. So I also refuse to worry about pissing off Christians.

Also, the word "holiday" stems from the phrase "holy day," and since the English language developed chiefly under the influence of Christianity, it's safe to assume that the word refers to Christian holy days.

Happy Holidays. haha.

Re: Just Say Merry Christmas!

Like ive said before, i have no problem with saying Happy Holidays to encorporate the 3 holidays. (Kwanzaa is a fucking joke, and doesnt get to be recognized by me as a holiday). I find it stupid to call a Christmas tree a holiday tree, and etc. Even if you dont celebrate the Christian side of Christmas (birth of jesus and etc), its still a CHIRSTMAS tree.

I think I'll start using this one...

http://www.chrismahanukwanzakah.com/

Geez, if someone wants to say Happy Holidays, let them freaking say Happy Holidays. If they want to say Merry Christmas, they should be able to say that too.

It's retarded to boycott a company because you don't like their advertising. If that was the case, I'd be boycotting way more stores due to stupid advertising.

But I'm not. Because that would be stupid. That's what that whole situation is... stupid.
