Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

NZ earthquake death toll at 75 as search continues

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand Some screamed from inside collapsed buildings. One woman used her mobile phone to call her children to say goodbye. Others tapped on the rubble to communicate with those on the outside.

Search teams used their bare hands, dogs, heavy cranes and earth movers Wednesday to pull 120 survivors from the rubble of a powerful earthquake in one of New Zealand's largest cities. Officials raised the death toll to at least 75, with 300 others listed as missing.

As rescuers dug through the crumbled concrete, twisted metal and huge mounds of brick across Christchurch, officials feared that the death toll could rise further, ranking the 6.3-magnitude earthquake among the island nation's worst in 80 years.

"There are bodies littering the streets, they are trapped in cars, crushed under rubble and where they are clearly deceased our focus ... has turned to the living," police Superintendent Russell Gibson said.

Prime Minister John Key said at a news conference that 75 people were confirmed to have been killed, with 55 of them identified. He declared a state of national emergency, giving the government wider powers to take control of a rescue and recovery operation that was growing by the hour.

Rescuers are concentrating on at least a dozen buildings that collapsed or were badly damaged.

In one of the worst, a camera inserted into the rubble showed images of people still alive, Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said. He said 120 people were rescued from wrecked buildings, while more bodies were also recovered.

Re: Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

This is really sad, and makes us feel helpless, because what can you do about an earthquake?
We can't even begin to imagine what that must of been like for those people who passed on due to this tragedy.
My heart and my prayers definitley goes out to them and their families.

For those who passed away, and for those left behind.

It is absolutely heartbreaking to see "The Kiwis" in such disarray. My sister and I had actually been there, to that very church square shown in some of the photos. They are just the kindest, most welcoming people on this planet and to see this tragedy befall them is just unspeakably sad--and terrifying.

Re: Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

I read a story in my local newspaper about this today. A reporter snaped a photo of a man and his two teenage children reacting moments after they were told that there is little hope for their mother (his wife) being found alive. She and many others are trapped in a collapsed office building.
Its so terrible. I cant imagine going through that, nor can I imagine being harrassed by the media at the same time.
My prayers go out to everyone in the hopes that no more tradgedy come to these families in their time of need.

thought this up date was hilarious!

How's this for an aftershock?

Prostitutes in the earthquake-ravaged city of Christchurch, New Zealand, are cashing in on the disaster by servicing horny emergency workers arriving from around the globe.

One local hooker, "Candice," told the Christchurch Press that she earned more than $1,000 in a single evening by soliciting workers just outside the damaged city's cordoned-off downtown area.

Among her clients: search and rescue staff, construction workers and foreign police officers.

"There's just lots of men here, lots of men without their wives and they're going to be a bit naughty," she said.

"In three years, I've never made this much before," she told the newspaper. "The foreign ones are the best, they pay the most. They are saying they are stressed out and they need to get some stress relief."

The workers poured into New Zealand's second-largest city after the Feb. 22 quake. Officials believe more than 200 people were killed in the natural disaster.

Another prostitute told the New Zealand paper that the brisk business was providing the cash to rebuild the home that she lost in the 6.3-magnitude quake.

"It's their way of dealing with it," she said of the sex-starved workers. "If they can get some relief, I think there's nothing wrong with that."
