Apple makes Macs run Windows XP Screenshot of Boot Camp, Apple The software walks users through the installation process Apple has released software that lets users run Microsoft's operating system on its computers that use Intel chips. Called Boot Camp the program lets Mac owners run both Apple's OSX and Microsoft's Windows XP. A trial version of the software is now available so users can install it. Future versions of Apple's OSX software will include the program. The release follows efforts by hackers to get Windows XP booting up on Macs that use Intel chips. Core war Apple said it had no plans to sell or support Windows but added that many Mac owners have said they want to run the operating system on their Intel-using machine. "We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing in a statement. Apple first announced a series of Mac machines that would use Intel chips in June 2005 and the first computers started shipping in January 2006. When Boot Camp is run it takes users through a series of steps that shows them how to split their hard drive so the two operating systems can sit side-by-side. It also shows how to make a boot disk to install the Windows XP operating system. When a machine with the two operating systems is turned on, Boot Camp gives them the option to start either OSX or Windows XP. Apple said it was only releasing a trial version of Boot Camp available for a limited amount of time. Finished versions of Boot Camp will be available in the next version of OSX, called Leopard, that is due to be previewed in August. Basic requirements for an Intel-based Mac that can run Windows XP are: OSX version 10.4.6 or later, latest firmware updates, 10GB of hard disk space, blank recordable CD or DVD and a single disc edition of Windows XP Home or Professional. By releasing Boot Camp, Apple is hoping to cash in on the interest generated by its iconic iPod music player. The dual booting system could let users run Windows to play games but use Mac applications for everything else. The release of Boot Camp comes only weeks after two hackers managed to get Windows XP running on an Intel-based Mac themselves. The pair won a $13,000 (£7,405) prize for their trouble. What do you think of the new software? Are you a PC user thinking of switching to a Mac? Would this make a difference to you? |

Re: Apple,boot camp,runs windows xp.
I love apple computers...the one click thing never really bothered me all that much, and now I have a new mouse where I can double click, so I am content! I have always preferred apples over PCs...but then again, I am rather odd.

Re: Apple,boot camp,runs windows xp.
it will make no difference to me what apple can get to run on a mac until they get a decent linux kernal to run properly. call me an elitist if you must, but linux has always been my favorite os since i started messing around with different operating systems. i think its a good idea to make xp usable by apple users, due to the fact that many xp users are drawn in by the sleek style of a mac, but are turned off by the lack of software available, i.e. games. who knows, this might change the entire pc world, i doubt it though.

Re: Apple,boot camp,runs windows xp.
I like Linux as well... Linux is like the hackers OS. IT is stock-piled with tools to get into other people's computers.

Re: Apple,boot camp,runs windows xp.
So, a whole week after BOOT CAMP has been available with all the associated song and dance...
Users Find Flaw in Boot Camp Matthew Broersma, Techworld.com Thu Apr 13, 10:00 AM ET Some Mac users are reporting problems with Apple's Boot Camp, the software that lets Intel-based Macs run Windows. Ironically, some users have said been stuck with Windows, with their hardware left unable to reboot the Mac OS. In a discussion thread* on Apple's technical support Web site, more than a dozen users reported that Boot Camp successfully partitioned their hard drive and allowed them to install a working version of Windows, but then would no longer allow them to switch back. "It all worked fine until I wanted to start up OS X. Then the startup screen never progressed. I actually left and came back an hour later and it was still just the gear thing spinning around," wrote a user from Chicago. "Now I'm stuck with a XP/Apple (scary!)" wrote another user. Users Excited Apple's announcement of Boot Camp a week ago had an effect akin to mass hysteria on users, the IT industry and the business community, even seeing Apple's stock price jump 10 percent. All this excitement may to have led some users to install Boot Camp without taking many precautions, ignoring the fact that the software is a "beta" product, and that Apple said at the beginning it wouldn't offer technical support. "This isn't a minor glitch, but a major problem. Barring erasing my drive and reinstalling OS X, I am stuck with an Apple laptop that only runs Windows," wrote a user. "I don't want solutions that entail using the command line. I would like something from Apple saying that they recognize the problem and are working on it." "Apple should consider taking Boot Cramp off distribution immediately!" wrote another. Other affected users were more philosophical about their quandary. "A bit scary, but that's life on the bleeding edge," wrote one user. A number of users said they had been forced to erase their hard drives and re-install Mac OS X, restoring their data from backups. Others said they had been able to fix the problem using command-line tools or Apple utilities such as Repair Disk. Apple said it does not offer support for the Boot Camp beta. The software will be built into a future edition of Mac OS X. * http://discussions.apple.com/thread....32603&tstart=0
