ok, that's what i said like two pages ago, and i even mentioned your name and matt's. but i did that in a different post. but still, i already addressed that.

but unless someone else is willing to host or kind of situate things, what other options are there?

Re: Almost Smart Convention 2009

seriously we kinda need a place where people can stay or somewhere big enough that everyone can bunk up together and be comfortable. The beach house would have been great if more people showed, there was more than enough room. Who else can host, or at least partially host?

too bad we can't all meet up in Nassau, it is so nice there in July. It is nice and hot, but a nice breeze, no humidity and tons of beach!! Plus they have so many festivals during the summer months, its amazing there and cheap!!

I know it is not in the "center" as some may want it to be, but the atmosphere is great, the clubs are great, and the people there are super nice...

I know Nassau is a stretch, but hey it would be fun! :)

Re: Almost Smart Convention 2009

cheap is good. lol. gas is going back up a little, but not nearly what it was in july. jesus christ gas was expensive.

and where the hell is nassau. the bahamas?
we don't have to aim for july either.

should we plan then see who can make it, or see who wants to have one this year, then someone plan when and where?

Re: Almost Smart Convention 2009

Gas could be $5/gallon next July. It's gone up a little but here it's been a contant 1.95/gallon for like a month. But who knows what it'll look like five months from now.

It's not fair to expect people to drive all the way to South Carolina for a convention. Colorado is much more central. So stop fucking talking about South Carolina.

well it doesn't matter what is fair or not it is where we can actually have one for cheap that matters. If we do not have a place to stay then there cannot be one...

It'll be cheap for you, but not for me because it's over 500 mi away. But whatever, you can have the same convention with the same people as last year, that's the "in" group anyway

I'm in favor of a central one.

Colorado would be awesome: I don't have a place to put you all, but I know my state well and could ensure fun for the more outdoorsy crowd.

How far away from civilization is Colorado's Garden of the Gods? The one in southern Illinois is phenomenal. Colorado's must be at least as stunning.

It's right on the edge of Colorado Springs. CS is a fairly large city and beautiful area, and about an hour from Denver (or from where I am).

oh my god. ethan. this post, plus the "it's not fair" comment...

the "in" group? Who's that? The people who've met up twice? lol.

I agree that central sounds best and if it comes to it, camping can be done. I'm sure there are some cheap hotels around there or something, but it'd be really nice to have everyone or at least the majority of the people stay somewhere together, and i doubt everyone can afford even a cheap hotel.

But I've got to say, aside from the little bit of drama, I've had an awesome time with everyone, both in Nashville and Edisto.

That's like a botanical garden? I've never been to one before. I'd like to get some good pictures, where ever it is.

The main thing that's sucked for me both times was all the walking. Not because I'm lazy, but because I have some major problems with my ankle. Walking in the rain to the Hard Rock Cafe in freaking flip flops nearly killed me, then the Burkenstocks on the beach in Edisto was a big mistake, too.
And I have to walk really slow so I'm not in pain.

I definitely do want to get out and explore what's around though, as long as it's either really cheap or free. lol.

Re: Almost Smart Convention 2009

Not exactly a botanical garden. More like a huMONgous wild garden. The one in southern Illinois shows water lines in the rock, so it's apparent the entire valley was under seawater at one time. As the water receded vegetation took over.

There are a few "Garden of The Gods" around the U.S., but I was told by some doctors who go on bike road trips that Illinois and Colorado's were the best.

Camping appears to be available in the area. Maybe y'all could find a place to stay between Colorado Springs and Denver. Then if anyone find it cheaper to fly rather than drive, a major airport would add to the convenience.

The photos here don't do justice compared to others I've seen, but here's the website: http://www.gardenofgods.com

Re: Almost Smart Convention 2009

First things first, the idea was to hang with the people from AS / celebrate Hamana's 21st birthday. Secondly, the reality of leaving home from anywhere in order to have fun and enjoy free time on a vacation requires time, money and convenience.(<-- is that spelled right? ) Thirdly, as usual I will be road tripping out to Colorado to see my freinds and who ever decides to come to the AS shin dig, hootnanny, convention thing.

Actually my plan so far is to fly to ST. Louis, chill with my friend Doobie for a couple days while I check out my future new car, then trip out to CO. But thats up for possible change. Who knows.

But I'll refer back to my old question. Who's been saving up some cash?

Re: Almost Smart Convention 2009

That's why I'm wondering if it might be cheaper to fly. Tickets are usually less expensive if reserved a few weeks in advance and might be quicker and much less expensive than gas, hotel and eating on a long drive.

On the other hand, if time and money is not an issue, a long drive can be real nice.

Birds eye view of Garden of the Gods in Colorado. Just left click to grab the photo and move the mouse around to see different views.

I've never flown before, so I don't have a clue about prices. But I'm definitely up for whatever's cheapest. lol. I'd like to get there as quickly as we could, because i tend to get restless legs after awhile. Maybe I'm not the only one. But I really don't like long drives unless I can sleep. :-)

It would depend on school now too, since I've started back this semester. And on Matt. lol. But he likes road trips.

---edit---

$380 for a 1 stop round trip for 2 people on Expedia and Travelocity for the weekend after the 4th (I just picked a random weekend).

Re: Almost Smart Convention 2009

Using travelocity's site, tickets a month from now would cost between $200ish to $300ish from the east or west coast to Denver. From London it was $500ish-$600ish. From Berlin, about 600ish-700ish. Can't reserve in July yet, so February estimates had to do. However, the prices won't increase overly much, so these can serve as an estimate. I'd assume another $100 for summer, but a travel agent once told me college, holiday and fiscal year end (October) travel times are the most expensive. Special events at the origination or destination points would also be best avoided.

If the mileage and cost for gas for a trip is compared to a plane ticket, it's likely that most living outside of Colorado would benefit by spending $ more toward fun, and less for driving and related road trip expenses.

There is also a possibility, that if several of you designate one person to represent you through a travel agent, you might get a better package deal. In which case the more people, the more of a discount might be given for flight and hotel accommodations. That's probably only for a group leaving to and from the same places though.
