There is no Life, without Death.

if you didn't die, how would you know what life is? Surely you would just be alive, but you wouldn't know what life is.
Because of Death, being alive ends. which is life. Life ends. Death shows what Life is.

You can be alive and alive forever. Would you even think about calling it Life?
No. I don't think you'd know what Life is.

For Life, you need Death.

i dont know, i know i'm not making this totally clear for everyone, but if you can't get the gist of it, then sucks for you. come back after a few posts maybe you'll get a better understanding through everything everyone else has said, huh.

What do you think? I mean you can't really think of it for real, but just imagine. No death. Do you know what Life is?

Methinks I understand what you're getting at; that sounds very much like Dualism to me (i.e. life and death are interdependent, as you were describing. Two opposing thoughts cannot exist without one another to contrast against, everything is relative, etc.).

Not sure if I agree with such a notion. At one point there was no death at all; we would've been eternal beings if we wouldn't have screwed it up. Life can exist without death; death is only the absence of life.

okay so this solitifys my creepy desier which i will explaine.

i want to EXPERINCE my death.
its the last experince we will ever have. the last pysical, emaotional, and mental stimulation ever. I want to live, and to live we must experince. i belive if i dont fully grasp my own death and live through it, so to speak, then i will never fully die, nor have lived, and my soul may just be stuck in a limbo or plain forever to wander.

Troo dat. Living things can never obtain an experiential knowledge of death, but we can witness it and we know it occurs. We see those who have died and can discern that we are not, in fact, dead. Hence, a contrast does exist because we can differentiate between life and death.

At least that's how I see it.

From the perspective of conciousness, you're probably right.

But even a creature that has never been exposed to the concept of death still has some hardwired concept of having something, because such a creature would still respond to certain situations in a way to preserve itself. For example, a hungry animal will eat to preserve its life; thus, self preservation proves, to some extent, that the animal is aware that it is alive.

Of course, such reflexive self preservation is arguably present for a reason - either evolution or by design - so the creature's awareness of life, at least as it pertains to self preservation, comes from the death of its ancestors.

hmm, but because it eats, how does it know it's alive? a robot doesn't know it's alive, yet it's doing things, because that's what it's programmed to do. is that then life?


i do like you being pragmatic there, that saying. it does make sense. but saying nothing has experienced death-- does it know it has life? if there's no death, then is there only life? but what is life, without death? ya see what im saying?

so maybe you can be alive. and if you know you're alive, you can acknowledge it as life? i think knowing about the ancestors' death is knowing too much.

Well based on whateveryone's saying, that death must be a part of life ...if it wasnt than there is no life! But what is life and what's death ... ever think whats gonna be next and when u die there isnt gonna be life no more then how come its(death) part of it ?
