Lockerbie Bomber Returns to Libya

The Libyan man jailed in Scotland for blowing up a US airliner over Lockerbie in 1988, has arrived back in Libya after being set free.

The Scottish government released Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, who is 57 and has terminal cancer, on compassionate grounds.

Yes, and it is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Unless the Scottish government has a way to bring back the dead so that they might live out the rest of their days with loved ones as well.

Re: Lockerbie Bomber Returns to Libya

yeah, the rest of the world is backward when it comes to legal systems, we should have given him to the Americans where he would have been subjected to a fair and just trial that would have conclusively proved his guilt in the bombing, removed from all witness intimidation and bribery, where all evidence is not tampered with and true justice is always served.

oh.

Re: Lockerbie Bomber Returns to Libya

Thank you for your outright sarcasm and completely incorrect view of the American legal system. I am sure what little you know of the American justice system has come from trials with big name celebrities which, as most Americans will surely tell you, are not justice.

On the other end of the spectrum, not all of our terrorist suspects are guilty and that is something that I hope that the current administration will work on.

But we don't release convicted criminals because their health is failing.

Re: Lockerbie Bomber Returns to Libya

Did you see the news? He got a hero's welcome in Libya.

I can't imagine what a HUGE slap in the face that is to all of the families of the people he killed.

Re: Lockerbie Bomber Returns to Libya

The hero's welcome was certainly uncalled for, and it's not going to do Libya, or the Libyan government, any favours on the world stage.

As for Megrahi himself, though, there are of course still questions as to whether or not he was even involved - and a large number of victims' families and family members feel he was perhaps wrongly convicted. I don't know enough about the investigation, and haven't read enough of the case to come to any conclusions myself, but I do hope this will open new avenues of investigation.

I feel sorry for Kenny MacAskill, he was in a very difficult position. Scottish law (and, indeed, British law) dictates that in certain circumstances, a prisoner should be awarded compassionate leave - it's been done for other convicted criminals, including murderers, so to that extent MacAskill was simply acting according to the rules of policy.

On the other hand, if Megrahi was indeed behind the bombing, arguably he's a very different sort of criminal, and perhaps should have been treated differently.

I don't know, and I'm not in Kenny MacAskill's position - something I'm particularly thankful for.

He was going to be criticised no matter what his decision was.

I wasn't giving a sarcastic view of the American legal system, I know jack shit about the American legal system and don't pertain to be anything different. I was giving a sarcastic view on this case.

Convicted he may be, but thanks to the US (and UK but mainly the yanks) the evidence used to convict him would have been laughed out of court under any other circumstances. They needed a scapegoat, they got one.

Christ, there's families of victims that have been actively supporting him and his legal appeals for years, you won't hear from any of those on any US networks I'll bet though.
The vast majority of Americans know fuck all about this case too except what the media has decided to tell them and currently that seems to equate to Scottish Authorities = soft touch idiots/terrorist sympathisers (as one frightening debate on Fox News was trying to imply that was highlighted over here)

Yeah the hero#s welcome was a bit crude, and the Saltires being waved around Tripoli is completely wrong. The Scottish Government and particularly Kenny MacAskill is taking all the flak for this but the cogs were put in motion a few years ago when Tony "America's Bitch" Blair agreed to a prisoner transfer agreement with Libya and made intimations that Megrahi was included in this deal, which he wasn't in a position to agree to.

It's almost common knowledge he didn't do it, but in exchange for allowing him to go home to die he has now, in legal terms at least, accepted responsibility by dropping his appeals against the conviction.

The prison would normally be stuck paying for the inmate's medical care, so it's really just trying to cut costs by releasing terminally ill patients. That hardly seems like mercy to me.

Yes, but that hardly means it will be put to use. Also, it's for federally-sentenced prisoners only. Of course, Megrahi would have been a federally-sentenced prisoner.

And now both Susan Atkins and Bernie Madoff want to be released on compassionate grounds. Both have terminally ill cancer.

Fuck that murdering bitch and that swindling bastard.

EDIT: Bernard Madoff doesn't have cancer. The news that he did was released just today as was the news that he doesn't.
