Religion

So this thread is basicaly designed to discuss and debate religion. I kno a lot of threads have become overrun with this topic, so I decided to post this to help clean that up. I guess you could start by asking questions, and I could try to answer them, but I can't guarantee that i will be able to answer them perfectly. And it doesn't have to be all about Christianity and God. I kno a lil bit about other religions, and i have the internet at my fingertips to look up what i don't kno, and if my dads home i can ask him. He has studied a lot of religions, including black and white magic. So feel free to ask about even voodoo and hoodoo.
(And noisome, i'm not moving this to the "Jokes & Comedy" section lol)

Re: Religion

Well, actualy mostly just the Bible. I got saved when i was 5. So i had only been reading for a year at the time. But from everything i have read after that, I have yet to find anything to make me believe different.

Sort of yes, sort of no. I believe that people can talk to spirits. But after death a human's spirit goes to either heaven or hell. But demons and angels are spirits that can go from heaven (angels) or hell (demons) to earth. So i guess someone could ask a demon to talk to Hitler or something like that. But i don't think a living person could directly communicate with the dead. So i guess the demon or angel would be the medium. Thats my opinion anyway.

Re: Religion

Hmm...
I've read the Bible, the Qu'Ran, several Vedas, and many Native American and other "pagan" legends.

I guess my question would be, what makes you believe the Bible as opposed to the other ones?
If you were exposed to the others before the Bible, do you think that would have changed your perception?

Ugh, that second question seems really leading, but I don't mean for it to be.

Re: Religion

Like you, foxy, I've read the Bible, the Qu'ran, and Native American legends.

Since I'm more of an agnostic, what I notice about the different beliefs are their similiarities and differences. Religion is absolutely fascinating to me in that regard. Are the stories in the Bible so compelling that they make me believe in them more? No.

Same way with the Qu'ran. Oh, and I'd recommend that every Christian read the Qu'ran. I think they might start to see how the Muslim community believes (or should believe) instead of prejudging it.

i've been saying this for years, and couldn't agree with you more.

but i would extend it - not just christians, but the western world* as a whole have a lot to learn that, i feel, would help things more than people realise.

...

*i realise "western world" is perhaps the wrong term to use - it is a gross generalisation, and there are other areas of the world with similar misconceptions - but it is the easiest, and most commonly used for what i mean to say.

Re: Religion

Agreed, Kali. I've heard a lot of people who have no idea what Muslims believe in. When I tell them that many of their stories are the same as "ours," they acknowledge Jesus' existence (not as a savior, obviously, but as a prophet), and that they believe in the same God as Christians and Jews, they're just shocked.

the torah, the bible, the qur'an etc - they're all the same book (almost) with another story tagged onto the end (that's a viciously basic way of putting it, but it stands).

A lot of christians i kno don't hate muslims. We believe that most of them are peaceful. But its the few extremist that do the crazy things we have known them to do.
But there are even christian extremists who do crazy things as well.

Re: Religion

Excellent description, Kali!

A professor I had a few years ago said "You know how Christians kinda think that the Jew are outdated? This is what Muslims think about Christianity." For some reason that stuck with me when I explain it to other people. It's basic, but it gets the point across.

The-Chadster, do you really intend to start another religious debate?

I'm not going to convince you that your God is not the only god or that there are no gods. So what would be the point?

Well, I'll amend that. They believe in the same God that created Adam and Eve and the deal with the ten commandments and so on and so forth with the Old Testament.

Its not supposed to be a religious debate. I kno a lot of people have a lot of questions about religion and i figured i would start a thread to help them get their questions answered.

Your first line says otherwise.

And take my word for it, it's bound to turn into a religious debate. Just wait til I feel particularly atheistic one day.

I was raised Catholic, but I consider myself an Atheist.

We can discuss the Bible if you'd like, or the Qu'ran. I deslike both of them. Sure, there are some good things in both of them, but there are nasty things as well.

My problem with religion isn't necessarily religion per se, it's the followers that get me.

Re: Religion

I've at least glimpsed -- know the basic tenets and some details -- about other world views: Islam, Animism, Buddhism, the Post-Modern "mood," Jehovah's Witnesses, and some others. Christianity, to me, stands out from the lot in these respects:

* God-focused (centrality of God; who He is and what He's done takes absolute precedence. Accountability has its place, but it's not the prime focus) and not self-focused ("how can I make myself better/presentable and, therefore, gain God's favor/mercy/approval?" or “no supreme being(s) exists or relates to me at all” or some variation).

* Christians can confidently know that they have salvation solely based on God’s word.

* Salvation does not come through works, but through faith in Christ alone.

Those are the main ways Christianity differs, anyway.
