LONDON (Reuters) - They came out of charity. They left with booming record sales.

The galaxy of rock stars who took part in Live 8 concerts on Saturday to help beat the curse of poverty have seen their discs fly off the shelves in music stores -- a case of bank balances as well as consciences winning out.

Live 8's main cause, making poverty history, also benefitted though, after the London performance of Beatles classic "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" was released over the Internet with all proceeds going to the campaign.

According to HMV, one of the country's main record retailers with 200 stores nationwide, Pink Floyd's "Echoes" album posted a staggering 1,343 percent increase in sales on Sunday compared with the same day a week ago.

The band re-formed for the Live 8 concert in London's Hyde Park, where they joined pop legends Paul McCartney, Madonna, U2 and Elton John among others in front of 200,000 people.

"Even allowing for the relative nature of this exercise ... this snapshot still shows that the Live 8 concert is having a marked effect on sales of featured artist recordings," said Gennaro Castaldo, spokesman for the HMV chain.

He stressed that the increase for Pink Floyd and other acts appearing in Hyde Park was partly due to the low number of records sold on Sunday, June 26. Total sales of "Echoes" on Sunday, July 3, the day after Live 8, were approaching 1,000.

Next came The Who's "Then & Now", with an increase of 863 percent, Annie Lennox's "Eurythmics Greatest Hits" (500 percent) and Dido's "Life For Rent" (412 percent).

ONLINE RELEASE

Coldplay's "X&Y", which has stormed the charts in Britain and the United States, registered one of the smallest increases out of the London Live 8 acts at just three percent.

But according to HMV, the band still sold the highest number of records at more than 2,800.

The only Live 8 performer to have clocked a drop in sales was Pete Doherty. His former group the Libertines saw sales of their "Up the Bracket" album drop by 35 percent.

Doherty's performance was singled out by the media as one of the worst of the nine-hour Hyde Park music marathon.

The Mirror tabloid called his duet with Elton John "shambolic", and people at the gig said he struggled with the words of "Children of the Revolution" and looked unsteady on his feet.

Record label Universal Music Group released online "Sgt. Pepper", sung by McCartney and U2 at the opening of the Hyde Park gig, within minutes of the performance.

A spokesman for Universal said it was already the number one track on the iTunes online music service in Britain, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Belgium. No outright sales figures were available on Monday. Proceeds go to Live 8.

The closing London Live 8 song, another Beatles classic "Hey Jude", has also been put online.

It should have been obvious that this would happen, it would happen even if all the artists had participated in the concert solely for the right reasons (which may or may not be the case) so you can't really get mad at the artists for doing the concert just because it benefitted their artist sales.

Blame those who went out and bought the cds. Hmm, that doesn't sound so reasonable does it?

Psychosis, this thread makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Because of the bands apprearing at Live 8 & performing live will always create an interest in the band themselves for new fans & old. Once the witness a band live & like them, they are going to usually run out & buy their albums. This is just a cause & effect thing that isn't really relevant. It happens with every live show at any venue that's done for any reason.

funksonic, do you honestly beleive that the performers at Live8 performed wholeheartedly and honestly to raise money for Africa, or do you think they also saw the bleedingly obvious link that you above claimed exists.

Psychosis isn't saying that the bands are heartless and that they only wanted to improve their record sales... But I do agree with him when he argues that they are completely full of shit when they act as if they really care. Sure, they don't mind helping out, and that has been shown. A convenient by-product of this helping though, seemed to help themselves a shitload more than it did the Africans.

Maybe also donate a cut of record sales, neh? Bono could probably pawn off his private jet for a fair bit, probably enough to help a few cities. Hell, he could probably stop buying those butt ugly sunglasses and save enough money to build a fresh water system. Live8 is a crock of shit, only because they tried to pass it off as a selfless LiveAid ripoff.

Bono more so than the others has been making efforts to bring awareness & change to these situations to the best of his abilities. Yes he has a great amount of fame & fortune but that gives him the ability & the power to at least try to make a difference. Some more than others but I really think they do care & that's why the did it. One of my former employers use to go on missionary work in Africa & India every year for months at a time. You know why because he's fucking loaded so he can afford to. If I was a millionaire, i would do the same because you have to go over there yourself & make a difference. WHen you donate money, you risk it not even going to the people you need it. It is usually hoarded by our govt or theirs. So that is why Live 8 to me has more credibility. They learned through the live Aid experience 20 years ago that donating money doesn't cut. Wipe out some debt, get the free trade going makes a lot more sense. Bono is a good guy who means well & is doing what he can to make a difference cause he realizes & appreciates how good he has it or how lucky he is. Plus I think Bono looks cool in those shades but that's my opinion.

Bono isn't doing what he can... He's doing what he feels like, because a) It makes him look good to people such as yourself, and b) a fucking massive boost in record sales.

Doing what he can would be living in a normal house, driving a normal car, wearing normal sunglasses, and using the rest of the money that he has and doesn't NEED to set up his own charity fund for the Africans. The reality of it is, that he won't do this. And probably with good reason, if I was in his position, I wouldn't either. What really pisses me off is when people such as him try to pass it off as if they are some kind of great, caring philanthropist.

We can agree to disagree on this issue then because seeing him in interviews & how well versed & passionate he is about whats going on Africa comes across very hearfelt & sincere to me.

I think most of you are just being overly negative about it & making accusations of these musicians that aren't exactly true. I think overall the intentions of mostly every musician involved is good & sincere.

In terms of an album like Joshua Tree that had great commercial success & was given praised by the critics, Achtung Baby had very similar success & praise. There album that's titled, "POP" is actually a great album too, but had little to no commercial success.

Psychosis initial statement was that these musicians did Live 8 with the sole intention of selling albums, which i honestly believe isn't true at all. The fact that they did sell albums is an indirect effect of their performance at Live 8. And most importantly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with creating a win/win situation for everyone that was involved.
