what category would system of a down be in? i am in a dispute with someone as to whether they are punk or alternative....what do you think?

I would put them down under metal. I would never even begin to consider them punk. Who ever said that has obviously never listened to SOAD.

sure they may have the anti-american politics attitude of modern and past punk bands..... but they are still metal. they are basically the Anti-Flag of metal

they're not punk that's for sure.

I don't like the way in which music is labeled these days anyway.

Half of them are wrong anyway. With all of the differing styles and originality that is comming out, people are trying to put labels on it, when the music is an expression of the band/songwriters and they hardly ever agree anyway.

Music is music. That's all there is to it.

not metal, not punk
id call them hard rock
or political rock
but i would not call them metal or punk, because their music spans several genres, but hard rock is a pretty broad category, so they fit there

How about we just leave it that how about it doesn't fir into a category. Like a category for music that cannot be categorized. Lots of bands don't stick to one style. They will have metal,rock,and even blues. So it is hard to place a band in a group and especially one that could fit into a couple. So I love SOAD and don't really care what category it is in.

They fit under metal more than any other rock category. Definately not punk.

thats waht i was saying about rock
its a very broad category, so groups like system fit perfectly there
