I'm not sure what forum this goes under, so I just put it in the General forum (Eric or other Mod, if you have a better place, please move it).

Has anyone signed up with Vonage or another type of internet-based phone who can give me some input on it?

My current local phone company keeps increasing my long-distance service price every few months and it's starting to get costly and infuriating. The only way I can change service providers is if I go with a broadband based company. I am wary about that; however, because I don't know much about how the service works. I did read Vonage's terms of service and found that everyday things I take for granted could be affected. For example, I won't necessarily be able to call 911 at any time and reach an operator. I'm also afraid that it may not be as clear as a regular phone line.

Anyhoo... any experienced user input would be much appreciated. Thanks.

We've used Vonage for over 2 years now. My dad was like "woo! Internet phone service with unlimited calling. That's awesome, I don't care if it's experimental." This was when the company first started. At first, it sounded like a cell phone for a month, but then they improved their service. Now it sounds exactly the same as a regular phone.

I suggest Vonage over the other companies because they give you more. My dad has 2 lines and an 800 number for his company, advanced call forwarding, voice mail on each line, call waiting and a bunch of other crap for $45 a month. They do have a 911 feature that they added a few months ago, but we fortunately haven't had to test it. We can call anywhere in the US, Canada and they just added Puerto Rico. We tested calling across country and Canada a few times; it was fun.

Over the last 2 years, I'd say my parents have saved over $2500.

I hope that helps, and I hope Weasel doesn't take this as breaking the rules by supporting a product.

My username on Skype is funnily enough... "SpudNuts"
